Moving Into a New Home? A Lock and Key Checklist
The keys handed over at closing are not the only keys to your new house. Over the life of a home, copies go to relatives, neighbors, contractors, cleaners, lawn crews, previous tenants, agents and lockboxes, and none of it is tracked.
Here is a straightforward checklist for the first week, ordered by what actually matters.

FAQ
Common questions
Should I rekey or replace the locks when I buy a house?
Rekey, in almost all cases. If the hardware is sound, rekeying makes every previous key useless at a fraction of the cost of new locks. Replace only the locks that are worn, damaged or missing a deadbolt.
When should I rekey a house I just bought?
Ideally the day you take possession. Until the locks are rekeyed, you have no way of knowing how many working keys exist or who holds them.
Do I need to change the locks on interior doors?
Generally no. Focus on every exterior entry point, the garage service door, and any outbuilding or gate.
