    Find out why, not just what

    We check the key, the cylinder, the latch or bolt, the strike alignment and how the door hangs. Most "bad locks" are actually worn keys or doors that have shifted.

    Repair where repair makes sense

    Service and lubricate the cylinder, replace worn internal parts, re-secure loose hardware, adjust or reposition the strike, and re-cut worn keys.

    Replace when it does not

    Corroded, cracked or badly worn hardware is replaced. New locks are keyed to match your existing keys wherever compatible.

    Split jambs, torn-out strikes and misaligned doors are addressed, because a good lock in a broken frame is not security.

Sticking locks: the usual suspects

Five causes cover almost every stiff lock we are called out to.

A worn key. Keys lose metal. A copy of a copy is worse. Cutting a fresh key from the original code often restores smooth operation on its own.

A dirty or dry cylinder. Dust, grit and old lubricant gum up the pins. Proper cleaning and a dry lubricant fix it, and note that WD-40 and household oils attract grit and make things worse over time.

A misaligned door. Houses settle, hinges sag, humidity swells wood. The bolt then rubs the strike. Adjusting the strike or hinges is the real repair.

A worn cylinder. Springs weaken and wafers or pins wear. This one usually needs repair or replacement.

Weather. Freezing moisture and corrosion in exposed locks: common on gates, sheds and unprotected exterior doors.

After a break-in or attempted break-in

Following a break-in, the priorities are securing the property and documenting the damage. We handle lock and door hardware repair and replacement, including strike plates torn out of the jamb, split frames, damaged deadbolts, forced knobs and drilled or punched cylinders.

Take photographs before anything is repaired if you plan to file an insurance claim, and get a police report number. Then it is worth upgrading rather than restoring: reinforced strikes, three-inch screws, a higher grade deadbolt on the door that was targeted and any other door with the same weakness. If keys were taken, add rekeying to the visit.

Repair or replace?

Repair is usually the better value when the hardware is decent quality, the body and finish are sound, and the fault is alignment, lubrication, a worn key or a single internal part.

Replacement makes more sense when the lock is builder-grade, corroded, cracked, has been drilled or forced, is obsolete with no available parts, or when you want a function it cannot provide. In that case see lock installation, and if you simply want old keys to stop working, rekeying is cheaper than either.

Lock Repair & Replacement questions

Can a sticking lock be repaired, or does it need replacing?

Most sticking locks are repairable. The cause is often a worn key, a dry cylinder or a door that has shifted, all fixable without new hardware.

Why does my deadbolt only lock if I pull the door?

The bolt is not aligned with the strike, usually because the door or frame has moved. Adjusting the strike or hinges fixes it. Left alone, it wears the bolt and eventually breaks keys.

What lubricant should I use on a lock?

A dry graphite or PTFE-based lock lubricant. Avoid WD-40 and household oils: they collect grit, gum up the cylinder and shorten the life of the lock.

Can you repair the door frame after a break-in?

We repair and reinforce lock-related damage including strike areas, split jambs and torn-out screws, and replace damaged hardware. Extensive structural or door slab damage may need a carpenter, and we will tell you if that is the case.

My key broke off in the lock. Can the lock be saved?

Usually yes. The fragment is removed with proper tools and the lock most often continues to work normally.
