Car key types, and why the price differs so much

"Car key" covers five very different pieces of hardware. What your vehicle uses is the single biggest factor in what a replacement costs:

  • Mechanical key: a plain metal key with no electronics, typical of vehicles built before the late 1990s and some work trucks. Cheapest to replace.
  • Transponder key: a metal key with a chip in the plastic head. The car will not start unless the chip is recognized, so the key has to be cut and programmed. See transponder key programming.
  • Remote head key: a transponder key with lock, unlock and trunk buttons built into the head.
  • Switchblade or flip key: a remote where the blade folds into the fob body.
  • Proximity smart key: push-to-start vehicles. The fob is detected by the car and often includes a hidden emergency blade. The most expensive to replace. See key fob replacement.

High-security laser-cut blades (common on many GM, Ford, Toyota, Lexus, Volkswagen and Audi platforms) require different cutting equipment than a standard edge-cut blade, which also affects cost.

What "all keys lost" actually involves

When at least one working key exists, adding a key is straightforward: duplicate the blade, then add the new chip through the vehicle programming sequence. When no key exists, the technician has to create the first one, which takes more steps.

Depending on the platform that can mean reading the key code from the vehicle, decoding the door lock or ignition cylinder to determine the correct blade cuts, connecting to the vehicle diagnostic port to pull or write security data, and waiting out a security timer that some manufacturers build in before a new key can be accepted. None of it requires a tow; it simply takes longer than cutting a spare.

Where the platform supports it, we can also delete previously programmed keys so a lost or stolen key no longer starts your vehicle. If your keys were stolen along with your address (a wallet in a stolen purse, for example), ask about this specifically.
