DetailsHome security work that actually matters
A great deal of residential lock work is quiet, unglamorous and far more effective than people expect. Three examples we see constantly in Jefferson County:
Strike plates and screws. A strong deadbolt anchored with three-quarter-inch screws into a thin jamb offers a fraction of the resistance it should. Long screws into the framing behind the jamb, with a reinforced strike, change how a door behaves under force.
Doors that no longer align. Houses settle. When a deadbolt has to be lifted or forced into the strike, the bolt is not fully extending, so the lock is not doing its job even when locked. Adjusting the strike or the door usually fixes it.
Keys nobody accounts for. Previous owners, contractors, ex-tenants, dog sitters, cleaners and old roommates. Rekeying resets that list to zero.
New home, new keys
If you have just closed on a house anywhere from Hoover to Trussville, the keys handed over at closing are not the only ones in existence. Copies get made over decades and there is no register of them. Rekeying every exterior lock is inexpensive, takes one visit, and means only your keys work.
It is also the ideal moment to standardize: one key for the front door, back door, garage entry and storm door instead of four. We can key all compatible locks alike in the same visit.
Landlords, property managers and short-term rentals
Rental turnover is a locksmith event every single time. We rekey between tenants across the Birmingham metro, install keypad locks where owners want to stop handing out physical keys, set up master key systems for multi-unit buildings, and repair the hardware that takes daily abuse in rental properties.
If you manage several properties in Jefferson County, call about handling turnovers on an ongoing basis.
FAQ
Residential locksmith questions
Should I rekey my locks or replace them?
Rekey when the hardware is sound and you simply want old keys to stop working, so it is the cheaper option. Replace when the lock is worn, damaged, low grade or you want a different function such as a keypad or a higher security level.
Can one key work every door in my house?
Usually yes. Compatible locks can be keyed alike so a single key opens the front, back, garage and storm doors. Where a lock uses an incompatible keyway we can replace that cylinder to bring it into the same system.
Do you work on apartments and rentals?
Yes, with authorization. Tenants generally need landlord or property manager approval before locks are changed, so check your lease. We work directly with landlords and property managers throughout the metro.
Can you get into my house without damaging the door?
Yes. Residential lockouts are opened using non-destructive techniques on the great majority of locks. Drilling is a last resort reserved for locks that are already broken or seized, and we discuss it with you first.
Do you install locks I bought myself?
Yes. Bring your own hardware and we will install it correctly, or we can supply hardware suited to the door. Either way we check the fit, alignment and strike so the lock works properly for years.
