FAQ
Lock Rekeying questions
What does rekeying a lock actually do?
It changes the pin combination inside the existing cylinder so the lock accepts a new key and rejects every previous key. The lock stays on your door; only the internal combination changes.
Is rekeying cheaper than changing the locks?
Yes, usually by a wide margin, because you are not buying new hardware. For a house with several exterior doors the savings add up quickly.
Can all my locks be keyed to one key?
In most homes, yes. Locks sharing a compatible keyway can be keyed alike. If one lock uses a different keyway, replacing that cylinder brings it into the same key system.
How long does it take to rekey a house?
A typical house with three or four exterior locks is a single short visit. Larger homes and multi-unit properties take proportionally longer.
Will rekeying work on any brand of lock?
Most common residential brands rekey without issue. A few proprietary or high-security cylinders require specific parts or must be replaced instead, and we will identify that when we see the hardware.
Can I rekey a lock myself with a kit?
Retail kits exist for some brands, but they only rekey to the combinations in that kit, will not key different brands alike, and often leave the lock reassembled incorrectly. Having it done properly costs little and keeps every door on one key.
