Home Security Checklist: What Actually Makes a Difference
Most break-ins are not skilled attacks on locks. They are opportunistic entries through the weakest available point, usually a door that gives way at the frame, or one that was not locked at all.
That is good news, because it means the effective upgrades are cheap and physical. Here they are, roughly in order of value per dollar.

FAQ
Common questions
What is the cheapest way to improve home security?
Reinforced strike plates with three-inch screws into the door framing. It is inexpensive, takes minutes per door, and addresses the point that actually fails during forced entry.
Are smart locks less secure than regular locks?
Not inherently. A reputable smart deadbolt uses the same bolt and strike as a mechanical one, so physical resistance is comparable. Installation quality and control of the override key matter more than the electronics.
Should I use a double-cylinder deadbolt if my door has glass?
Usually no. Needing a key to exit is a serious fire risk. Security film or laminated glass addresses the reach-through problem without blocking escape.
