Everyone has a drawer key that never quite worked. The reasons are consistent:

• Copying a worn original. The machine faithfully reproduces the wear, so the copy starts life out of specification.
• Generational drift. A copy of a copy of a copy can drift far enough from the original to stop working entirely.
• Wrong blank. A blank that looks similar but has a different profile will bind or refuse to enter.
• Worn or badly calibrated machines. High-volume retail machines drift out of calibration.
• No burr removal. Sharp burrs left on a fresh cut chew up the pins in your lock every time you use it.

If your original key is already worn, the better move is a key cut to the original code, which resets the whole system rather than propagating the wear.

A "Do Not Duplicate" stamp is a request, not a security feature, it carries no legal force and any shop can ignore it.
