How the job goes

  1. 1

    Diagnose before replacing

We check the battery, the contacts and the board first. A battery or a shell is a fraction of the cost of a new fob, and plenty of "dead" fobs need nothing more.

  2. 2

    Source the correct fob

Fobs are matched by part number, frequency and chip family, not by appearance. Using the right part is what prevents intermittent range problems later.

  3. 3

    Cut the emergency blade

Smart keys hide a mechanical blade for manual door entry. We cut it to your vehicle so it actually works when you need it.

  4. 4

    Program and test

The fob is programmed to the vehicle, then every function is tested: lock, unlock, trunk, panic, proximity detection and push-button start.

Battery, shell, or a genuinely dead fob?

Three different failures look identical from the driver seat.

Battery. Range shrinks first: you have to stand closer, then closer still, then nothing. A coin cell is cheap and takes moments. If a push-to-start vehicle tells you to hold the fob against the start button or the steering column, that is a classic low-battery message.

Shell. Fobs live in pockets and get dropped. A cracked case, a snapped key ring loop or flattened rubber buttons can all be fixed by transferring the original board into a new shell, which keeps your existing programming intact.

Board. Water damage, a crushed case or a failed transmitter means the fob itself has to be replaced and programmed. This is the only one of the three that needs new programming.

Push-to-start and proximity smart keys

Proximity keys communicate with the vehicle continuously so the doors unlock on approach and the engine starts with a button. Because the fob carries the security credential, losing all of them is equivalent to losing every key: the vehicle has to have a new credential written to it.

We program proximity keys for most makes on site. The emergency blade concealed inside the fob is cut at the same time: worth doing even on a working fob, because a flat 12V battery leaves the door lock as your only way in.

Certain very new platforms restrict smart key programming to franchised dealers. We check your specific vehicle before dispatch so you are not charged for a trip that cannot succeed.

Lost fob security

A lost fob is a security issue, not just an inconvenience, particularly if it went missing with something showing your address. Where the platform supports it, we erase the lost fob from the vehicle memory when programming the replacement, so the missing fob no longer unlocks or starts your car.

FAQ

Key Fob Replacement & Programming questions

Can you program a key fob I bought online?

Sometimes. If it is the correct part number and frequency for your vehicle and has not been locked to another car, it can usually be programmed. Bring it out when we arrive and we will check; if it is not usable we carry the correct part.

How much is a replacement key fob?

It varies widely by vehicle. A basic remote is inexpensive; a proximity smart key for a late-model vehicle is the most expensive automotive key we cut. Call with your year, make and model for a specific figure.

My push-to-start car says "no key detected". Is the fob dead?

Most often it is the coin cell battery. Many vehicles let you start by holding the fob against a marked spot on the column or start button. Replace the battery first: if the message persists, the fob or the receiver needs attention.

Can I get a fob without an emergency key blade cut?

You can, but we recommend cutting it. If the vehicle battery dies or the fob fails, the mechanical blade is the only way into the car.

Do you supply fobs with remote start?

Where your vehicle came with factory remote start, the replacement fob can support it once programmed. Aftermarket remote start systems use their own separate remotes.
