A few practical things help.

• Check every other door and window before assuming you are locked out. Back doors, garage side doors and basement entries are frequently unlocked.
• Do not force a window. Broken glass costs far more than the lockout call, and window frames damaged from outside rarely close properly again.
• Do not try to pick the lock with improvised tools. Bobby pins and screwdrivers break inside cylinders, and a jammed cylinder is a much bigger job than a lockout.
• Wait somewhere safe. A car, a neighbor’s porch or a nearby business is better than standing in the dark or the heat.
• If someone is in danger (a child or pet locked inside, a medical situation, extreme heat), call 911 first, then call us.

Properly performed, no. Lock picking works with the mechanism, not against it: the pins are set individually and the cylinder rotates the same way it does with a key. When we leave, the lock works exactly as before.

Drilling is sometimes the only option, and honest locksmiths say so up front. It applies to a small minority of cases: locks already seized or broken internally, high-security cylinders with anti-pick protection, or hardware that has corroded past the point of operating. We tell you before drilling, explain the cost of the replacement cylinder, and never present drilling as a routine first step. If a company arrives and immediately reaches for a drill on a standard residential deadbolt, that is a warning sign.

There is an important difference between keys sitting on the kitchen counter and keys that are genuinely lost. If your keys were lost or stolen, opening the door is only the first half. Anyone holding those keys can still walk in, and if a house key was on the same ring as a car key or an addressed item, that risk is real.

In that situation we recommend rekeying the locks during the same visit. Rekeying makes every old key useless while keeping your existing hardware, and it is far less expensive than replacing locks. We can also cut spares so this does not happen again. See key duplication.

Most repeat lockouts have a simple cause and a simple fix.

Self-latching knob locks. If your door locks itself every time it shuts, one gust of wind while you take the trash out is all it takes. A lock with a different function, or the habit of carrying keys to the mailbox, solves it.

No spare anywhere. A spare with a trusted neighbor or family member nearby beats a fake rock in the yard, burglars know all the hiding spots.

A key you have to fight with. A worn key or sticking lock is a lockout in progress. Fix it while it is still an inconvenience.
