    Edge-cut blades are cut to code or copied; high-security laser-cut blades are milled on the correct machine so the blade turns the ignition smoothly.

    Connect and program

    Programming happens either through the diagnostic port, through an onboard sequence the vehicle supports, or by cloning the existing chip when that is the cleaner route.

    Test start and remotes

Cloning versus onboard programming

There are two ways to add a chip key, and the right one depends on your vehicle.

Cloning copies the data from your existing working chip onto a new one. The vehicle sees an identical key, so no programming session is required and no keys need to be erased. It is quick and works well on many older Ford, Toyota, Honda, Chrysler and GM platforms, but it only works if you still have a functioning key, and a cloned key cannot be individually deleted later.

Onboard or diagnostic programming registers a brand new key into the vehicle memory as its own distinct key. It is required for all-keys-lost work, and it is the better route when you want the ability to erase lost keys later. Some platforms require a security wait period during this process.

Why the key you bought online will not start your car

Online key listings rarely explain the two separate steps involved. A blank key has to be (1) cut to your vehicle and (2) programmed to your vehicle. Buying a blank solves neither. Common problems we are called out to fix include:

  • The wrong chip family for the platform: physically fits, never programs
  • A remote that matches the picture but uses a different frequency
  • A previously programmed used fob locked to another vehicle
  • A blade profile that is close but binds in the ignition

When the problem is not the key

A no-start with a security light is not always a key fault. We also see failed transponder ring antennas around the ignition cylinder, damaged immobilizer wiring, worn ignition cylinders that no longer align the chip with the antenna, and body control module faults. Programming a new key will not fix any of those.

How do I know if my key has a transponder chip?

If the vehicle was built from roughly 1998 onward and the key has a thick plastic head, it almost certainly has a chip. A quick test: a purely mechanical copy will turn the ignition but the engine will start and immediately stall.

Can a hardware store or kiosk program my chip key?

Generally no. Most copy machines only duplicate the metal blade, and many kiosks handle only a narrow list of older vehicles. Programming a chip to the immobilizer needs automotive locksmith equipment.

Can you program a key if I have no working key?

Yes. That is standard all-keys-lost work: we originate the key, cut the blade and write it into the vehicle security system.

Does programming a new key erase my existing keys?
