Trunk Unlock Service in Birmingham, AL

Loading groceries or a suitcase, setting the keys down for a second, and closing the lid is one of the most common ways people lock themselves out. Express Key Locksmith opens trunks, hatchbacks and tailgates on site throughout Birmingham and Jefferson County, without prying the lid or damaging the latch.

Some vehicles are opened through the cabin using the interior release or fold-down rear seats. Others are opened at the trunk lock itself. The right approach depends on your vehicle, and choosing it correctly is what keeps the panel gaps, paint and latch intact.

Call (205) 259-8892 with your year, make and model, and tell us whether the keys are in the trunk or the cabin.

What this service includes

  • Trunk, hatch and tailgate opening on cars, SUVs and crossovers

  • Entry through the cabin using interior releases or fold-down seats where appropriate
  • Trunk lock cylinder manipulation where cabin access is not possible
  • Trunk locks and latches that will not release checked and diagnosed
  • Replacement keys made if the trunk key is lost rather than locked inside

  • You closed the trunk with the keys or fob inside it

How the job goes

  1. 1

Tell us the vehicle and situation

Sedan trunk, SUV hatch and pickup tailgate are three different jobs. We also need to know whether the keys are in the trunk or elsewhere.

  2. 2

Open the cabin first when it helps

On most vehicles the fastest non-destructive route is opening a door, then using the interior trunk release or folding the rear seats down.

  3. 3

Work the trunk lock if needed

Where there is no cabin route, the trunk cylinder is manipulated directly with automotive tools sized for it.

  4. 4

Check the latch before we go

We confirm the trunk closes, locks and releases normally afterwards, and flag anything that needs attention.

Why trunk lockouts often need cabin access first

Most modern trunks are not opened at the trunk. Many vehicles no longer have an external trunk key cylinder at all, relying on a fob button, an interior release or an electronic switch. In those cases the practical route is to open a door using standard car lockout methods, then release the trunk from inside.

SUVs and crossovers are often even simpler because the cargo area connects to the cabin: once a door is open, the rear seats fold and the item is reachable. Pickups with locking tailgates or tonneau covers are handled at the lock itself.

The reason this matters: prying a trunk lid or forcing a latch bends sheet metal, ruins alignment and breaks weather seals, and none of that is necessary.

Dead battery, dead trunk release

If your vehicle battery is flat, the electric trunk release is flat too. That surprises people who have never needed the mechanical route. Many vehicles include an emergency release handle inside the trunk (a legal requirement on newer cars in the US) and a mechanical fallback such as a lock cylinder hidden behind a badge or trim cover.

We know where those fallbacks live on common platforms and use them rather than forcing anything. It is also a good argument for having the emergency blade in your smart key cut. See key fob replacement.

FAQ

Trunk Unlock Service questions

Can you open a trunk without the key?

Yes. Trunks are opened either through the cabin using the interior release or folding seats, or by working the trunk lock cylinder directly. No key is required.

Will opening the trunk damage my car?

No. We use non-destructive automotive methods. Damage happens when people pry the lid or force the latch, which we do not do.

My trunk will not open even with the key. Is that still a locksmith job?

Often yes. A worn cylinder, a seized latch or a stretched release cable are all things we can diagnose and frequently repair on site.

Do you open SUV hatches and pickup tailgates?

Yes, including rear hatches, liftgates and locking tailgates. Tell us which you have when you call so the technician brings the right tooling.
