FAQ
Broken Key Extraction questions
Can a broken key be removed without replacing the lock?
In the large majority of cases, yes. With proper extraction tools the fragment comes out and the lock keeps working. Locks usually only need replacing when the cylinder was already worn or when someone forced the fragment deeper.
Can I get the broken key out myself with tweezers or glue?
Please do not. Tweezers push the fragment deeper, and glue bonds it to the internal pins. That turns a simple extraction into a lock replacement. Leave it and call.
Can you make a new key from the broken pieces?
Often yes. If the fragment is intact we can decode the cuts from it, or decode the lock itself. For a car key we also program the chip so the new key starts the vehicle.
My key broke in the ignition. Do I need a tow?
Usually not. Extraction and any follow-up ignition work are done at the vehicle. A tow is only relevant if diagnosis finds a fault outside the lock and key system.
The head broke off but the blade still works. Should I keep using it?
No. A headless blade is hard to grip and the remaining metal is already fatigued: it will break again, probably inside the lock. Have a fresh key cut instead.
