    Diagnose the real cause

    We check the key wear pattern, the cylinder, the steering lock, the shifter interlock and the immobilizer before recommending anything. Many "bad ignitions" turn out to be worn keys or a loaded steering lock.

    Free the key if it is stuck

    Stuck keys and broken blades are extracted with proper extraction tools, protecting the cylinder wafers instead of gouging them.

    Repair or replace the cylinder

    Where the cylinder can be rebuilt, that is the cheaper route. Where it is worn out, we install a replacement cylinder suited to your vehicle.

    Key to match and test

    Where the platform allows, the new cylinder is keyed to your existing key so you keep carrying one key. Then we test start, accessory and off positions plus key removal.

Simple things to try before you call

Two very common causes cost nothing to rule out.

Steering wheel pressure. If you parked with the wheels turned or on a slope, the steering lock can bind against the ignition. Apply firm pressure to the steering wheel left and right while gently turning the key.

Shifter position. Automatics will not release the key or turn the ignition unless the shifter is fully in Park. Nudge the lever firmly into Park, or try Neutral with the brake applied.

What not to do: never force the key with pliers or a screwdriver. That is how keys break off inside cylinders and how a repair becomes a replacement. Do not spray lubricant into the cylinder either: it collects grit and shortens the cylinder life.

Worn key or worn ignition?

Keys and cylinders wear together. A key used thousands of times loses metal from its peaks; the wafers inside the cylinder wear at the same time. Eventually the pair no longer align well enough to turn reliably.

Telltale signs of a worn key: the original key works worse than a spare that has sat in a drawer, the key face is visibly rounded, or the key only works at a particular angle. In that case a freshly cut key (cut to the factory code rather than copied from the worn key) often restores normal operation for a fraction of an ignition replacement.

If a new key still will not turn smoothly, the cylinder itself is worn and needs repair or replacement. Either way, diagnosing first is what keeps the bill down.

Ignition replacement and your existing keys

Nobody wants to carry two keys for one vehicle. On most platforms we can key the replacement ignition cylinder to your current key so a single key still operates the doors, trunk and ignition. On some vehicles the cylinder can only be supplied pre-keyed, in which case you will have a separate ignition key, and we will explain that before starting the work.

Ignition Repair & Replacement questions

Can a locksmith fix an ignition, or does it need a mechanic?

Ignition lock cylinders, keys and immobilizer key issues are locksmith work. Starters, ignition switches wired into the electrical system and battery or charging faults are mechanical work. We diagnose which side the fault is on and tell you plainly.

My key is stuck in the ignition. What should I do?

Confirm the shifter is fully in Park and the wheel is not under load, then try gentle pressure. Do not use pliers or force: that snaps the key inside the cylinder. Call and we will remove it properly.

Do I need a tow for ignition repair?

Usually not. Ignition cylinder work is done at the vehicle wherever it is parked. If diagnosis shows the fault is elsewhere in the vehicle electrical system, we will tell you so you can arrange the right repair.

Why does my key turn but the engine will not crank?

That points away from the lock cylinder: commonly a starter, a neutral safety or brake switch, a battery or an immobilizer fault. We check the immobilizer and key side and identify whether it is a locksmith or mechanical repair.

Will a new ignition come with new keys?

Where possible we key the new cylinder to your existing key so you keep one key. Some vehicles only accept a pre-keyed cylinder, which means a separate ignition key, and we confirm which applies to your vehicle up front.
